Gradually the landscape changes from desert to real Jungle Book country. Green mountains and hills begin to rise up and we eventually reach Udaipur which is picturesquely nestled within the hills on the edge of a lake. It’s a magical setting. The whitewashed old town rises up from the serene waters of the lake, the palace set grand against the blue sky. Temple topped mountains surround. It’s also the setting for much of Octo****. Roger Moore chased by machine gun armed rickshaws through its winding streets. And don’t the locals make the most of it 20 odd years on. Screenings every night in some places. Every night, 365 for over 20 years. We try messing around asking them if they’re showing Goldfinger tonight. Asked one guy if he’d seen Octo**** ”No no no…we sat and watched while they filmed it, why we need to watch the movie as well”. Well, it doesn’t quite work like that. Spend 4 nights here, find a pool to try to cool off, go on an excellent Indian cooking course and finally when leaving are given some embarrassing yellow / orange garlands to wear to the bus station. The bus station…onto Bundi. The only option is a nightbus. We book a double sleeper berth. This amounts to a double coffin set above the standard seats in which you seal yourself with sliding
