Transformational Courts Trailer (1-9-11)

Project Description TRANSFORMATIONAL COURTS (working title) A Documentary Film by Dan Woods Transformational Courts is a one-hour independent documentary produced by Dan and Debbie Woods for national pubic broadcast, major public outreach and professional development. PBSeight is the Presenting Station. We incarcerate 1% of our entire population. This rate is five times higher than the UK, from whom we inherited our judicial system. This is symptomatic of both high cost and low success rates. 75% to 85% of DWI and drug offenders will be rearrested within three years of release. A year of prison cost Minnesota taxpayers 000, more than a year’s tuition at a good private college, and is the single largest expense to many county taxpayers. Problem solving courts have been called the most important judicial innovation in a century. This approach to jurisprudence recognizes that repeat offences in certain cases are driven by underlying causes and that these ongoing offences can be reduced or eliminated by addressing those underlying causes. These problem solving courts cost 00 to 00 per offender and show a 75% national success rate. But this data, though powerful, obscures the compelling, transformational personal change that this process frequently triggers. Transformational Courts (wt) is an intimate portrayal of that transformational change. This observational documentary tracks clients from arrest and incarceration, through treatment and weekly discussions in court
