Hazardous Drinkers and Moderation Management
Of problem drinkers only about 10% are truly alcoholics. However, approximately 25% are comprised of another group who are causing intermittent problems, but are not showing physical signs of dependence, and are known by WHO as hazardous or risky drinkers. Besides programs like MM there is really nothing for that 25% group. MM provides a tested and scientifically validated way to help them. MM was developed by Bill Miller, who was the father of motivational interviewing, which is another major treatment approach in the alcohol and drug field. It is worth exploring MM , as it is scientifically based, there are tremendous varieties of resources and, if a person isn’t successful at moderating their alcohol, there is support for making their transition to abstinence.

Modern Management (MM) is a group that has been in existence for over 10 years. It is designed for people who are not sure whether they want to moderate their drinking or abstain altogether. People who are not successful at moderating alcohol typically move on to an approach called “Smart Recovery”. MM is based largely online, and it is a worthwhile starting point for people to decide how they want to manage their alcohol abuse that will be effective for them. This self-empowering process is done through round the clock chat rooms. A tool is available for people to monitor their alcohol use (either anonymously or not) and record how many drinks they have had each day. The system MM uses is based on a treatment approach called ‘behavioral self-control training”, which is probably the style most studied on its approach for alcohol problems in the world. Most people have never heard of it, but it is the system which has had the most effectiveness of any approach. MM members also have access to a free website called “Drinker’s Checkup” where they can do a self assessment using scientifically validated assessment instruments. This way they can explore the pros and cons of moderation as an option for themselves.
