Intervention Can Save Lives

Intervention Can Save Lives

If you are an addict or alcoholic, or both- then you are probably familiar with the term “Intervention”. In fact, if you are an addict or alcoholic, the thought of an intervention is probably your worst nightmare. To all of a sudden find yourself duped or enticed by some means to show up somewhere, and when you walk in the door, SURPRISE! You find yourself in the middle of a room full of people that have by one way or another been affected by your addiction.

When this situation happens to some people, they take off running, and go immediately to get high, leaving the room full of friends, family and loved ones sitting there. Often they wait around for the addict to return just in case he has second thoughts about it. But that is rare.

There is nothing more powerful or more convincing than a room full of people, that one by one read a letter aloud for all in the room to hear. The letter usually conveys the same basic message of their love for the addict, but disgust over what they are doing to themselves and the effects it is having on others. At the end of the latter there is always some type of ultimatum given. Sometimes the ultimatums can be pretty harsh. They threaten losing a place to stay, or use of a vehicle, or cutting off contact and money supplies. And after everyone around the room has read their letter, the addict is offered a free ticket to a predetermined place for rehabilitation.

Between the emotional outpouring of the room, the extreme guilt of the addict, and the ultimatums that will go into effect if the addict rejects the offer, it’s hard not to give in. The addicts usually accept the offer, and away they go.

The whole point is this; if you are an addict or alcoholic, and your people love you, and are concerned about you enough to organize an intervention – and everyone shows up, then seize the opportunity! If this happens to you, do not run away. Stay and listen to what is good for you. Accept the proposal to get clean, and drop everything to go! Drugs and alcohol will get you in the end, and you may never have this kind of opportunity again! An intervention can save your life, so swallow your pride and your anger and just do it.
