Q&A: What’s the Definition of an Alcoholic?
Question by MC: What’s the definition of an alcoholic?
I go to AA now because I’m trying to drink less and work through some other addictions (food, LOST (lol) exercise, facebook… to name a few (no drugs)), but I don’t necessarily think I’m an alcoholic. Sure, sometimes I have too much and get belligerent, but I think there is a difference between having a ‘drinking problem’ and being an alcoholic. I probably drink one glass of wine 2-3 times per week, and go long periods (1-2 months) between getting drunk, especially because I’m in grad school and I just can’t afford to be hungover and off my game. There are bottles of wine in my house and I have absolutely no desire to drink them as well. I guess I’m trying to figure out of I just need to face the music and have a big piece of humble pie, or if all those people in AA asking me to introduce myself as “Hi, I’m so and so and I’m an alcoholic” are wrong, because I don’t want to call myself something I don’t think I am.

2-3 times a week…..come on man, you’re no alcoholic. Could not find the “definition” for an alcoholic, but look at it this way. Does your drinking get in the way/interfere with your daily routines, your job, family, life in general? If not you’re cool. You’re no alcoholic, you’re just paranoid. Life life, have fun, drink, just don’t let the alcohol take over your life!
