Problems Associated With Teenage Alcohol Abuse

Teenage alcohol abuse is almost a universal problem, but the most is felt much more so in advanced countries like the US, Canada and the European countries because of the liberal lifestyle that exists in these places. In US especially, the situation is quite dire, with more than 80% of the youth having tried their first drink of alcohol before they reach the age of attending high school. This includes boys and well as girls, though the prevalence of alcohol abuse is more prominently in the male gender. Then there is also the problem of binging which is quite an issue. Teenagers who binge will have more than five drinks of alcohol at once. This will take a toll on their way of thinking and will cause them to feel blanked out. If they drive in such a condition, it could be dangerous not just for them but also to others on the road.

Various problems make the issue of teenage alcohol abuse much more complicated than it is in adults. The following is a list of the problems that are involved, mostly on the basis of reports from centers that are targeted at teen alcohol abuse treatment.

1. The ignorance in the minds of both the teenage victims as well as their parents is one of the major problems here. Teenagers who get into alcohol abuse do not know what they are actually getting into. They do not know the repercussions that they will have to face in later life. This is what makes the problem much more serious.

There is also ignorance in the parents and caretakers of these teenagers from various perspectives. They might not be able to understand that their children are into an alcohol abuse simply because they are not quite aware how to read the signs. They will be often lied to and kept in the dark by the abusers. This is the reason why they will not be able to take corrective measures when there still is time. This is also compounded by the fact that they will not know what is to be done even if they know that there is an abuse situation. They might not know the options of treatment, and may not know how the treatment program works.

Today, there are several counselors to handle teen alcohol abuse treatment in various places such as schools and colleges. Not only can the students visit here, but their families also can. In fact, these centers will intervene in the treatment process for the teenager once they know that there is a condition of abuse.

2. The second main problem is the age of the patient. This works against them in several ways. Firstly, because the patients are of a tender age when their nervous system is still developing, there are many more chances that their addiction will become totally a part of their systems. They will certainly find it very difficult to snap out of their habit. This is why the treatment centers will have to try harder than usual.

Secondly, the treatment itself becomes difficult. Detox is one of the main arms of addiction treatment for teenagers, but this will be impeded by the fact that the patients are too young and normal medicinal procedures cannot be used on them. Their tender bodies might not be suited for those forms of medication. They will need milder approaches, but given the fact that the addiction has become quite entrenched into their systems, these milder dosages will take a long time to work. During this period, the difficult withdrawal period will take its toll on the young patients.

3. The counseling approach will need to be done in a different manner too. Young people will have to be educated on what the addiction is all about. They will have to be brought out of any emotional problems that might be instrumental in keeping them with their addictions. They will need to be trained on what repercussions their alcohol abuse can have on their future life. Only when they know all this will they be on a road to recovery.

However, it becomes difficult to counsel teenagers because most of them will be reluctant to realize the gravity of the situation. They will not be responsive to the counseling because denial will still persist.

Detox is the main arm of alcohol abuse treatment in youngsters, but that is impeded by their age. At the same time, counseling becomes difficult. Treatment centers that cater to teen alcohol abuse treatment have to use extremely sensitive approaches to bring their young patients to recovery.
