If you love your man, and he gets abusive, what do you think is going on? If you consult a ‘family worker’ you’re likely to be encouraged to leave him. Sometimes this is the right advice. But if you know in your heart (or your brain) that this man is usually loving and caring and fun to be with, where do you go? Many women are intimidated by their ‘family worker’ and act on their advice. I once subscribed to the same view that ‘bad behavior’ was, simply bad behavior. But my direct experience changed my beliefs.

There could be another explanation for his abusive behavior, one that your family worker simply cannot comprehend. Family workers are trained to spot ‘bad behavior’ and to help their client, the ‘victim,’ to run away. They don’t ever consider that ‘bad behavior’ could be caused by anything that can be fixed, or treated.

About six months ago, Charlene Lugar, wife of Senator Richard G Lugar (R-Ind.) was charged with DWI and hit-and-run.

Lugar was arrested in McLean after an officer stopped her, citing visible damage to her car and smoke coming from the hood. Police later determined she also hit an empty parked car about two miles from where she was stopped.

Three hours after being stopped, Lugar’s BAC measured .11.

Lugar plead guilty to DWI (the misdemeanor hit-and-run was dropped in a plea agreement). She will pay a standard 0 fine, lose her license for a year and complete an alcohol counseling program. Lugar also received a 30-day jail sentence, suspended pending completion of the above.

Lugar was fortunate—assuming she completes her other obligations, she’ll be able to avoid jail time. This is the sign that she was working with an experienced Virginia attorney.
