What Else Works?: Creative Work With Offenders

Used – This book has developed out of a growing awareness amongst practitioners that centralized notions of what works and ‘one size fits all’ approaches to work with offenders and other groups is inevitably limited in its scope and effectiveness. This realisation reopens the door on ‘what works, with whom and in what circumstances’, i.e. the idea that successful intervention can come from a number of different approaches, linked to individual difference. Alcoholism
Have you talked to an alternative physician about nutritional therapy? I ask, you mean you can be cured with vitamins? It is not as simple as that, but nutrition can help. As I explain in another article on thyroid, low thyroid function can cause depression. For some, alcohol is a way to alleviate the depression. For others, the depression or alcoholism is a result of chemical imbalances traced to poor nutrition.
What is most important to me, in writing this article, is that you feel empowered. For sufferers and their loved ones, alcoholism takes away control of their lives. If you drink or have a loved one who drinks, I have news that will save you a broken heart and/or a broken life. Through nutrition, you can take charge of your health and become clean and sober for the rest of your life. Good nutrition is all-important in getting off the bottle. In fact, I was amazed to discover that even the American Dietetic Association has determined alcoholics can benefit from nutrient therapy and that most hospitals now incorporate improved nutrition in their alcohol programs. The ADA even performed its own study to see if nutrition would help the alcohol rehabilitation success rate.
Adults in Later Life With Mental Health Problems
Adults in Later Life With Mental Health Problems
Most older people do not develop mental health problems, but a significant minority have dementia or experience problems such as depression.
It is estimated that 18% of the general population in the UK are of pensionable age and that this figure will grow to 20% by 2025. As a society, we tend to assume that older people will develop mental health problems as a ‘normal’ aspect of ageing. Most older people do not develop mental health problems, although a significant minority does. For example:
about 25% of people over 85 have dementia.
between 10-15% of people over 65 have depression
between 4-23% of older adults seen by medical staff have an alcohol problem.
In addition to those older people who have an identifiable mental illness such as dementia, there are many who experience psychological or emotional distress associated with isolation, loneliness or loss. These problems are not recorded by the health or medical care system.
What Does Living With Alcoholism?
What Does Living With Alcoholism?
Symptoms of Alcoholism can be recognized at an early stage in the disease progression, but if not dealt with, alcoholism can be fatal. If left untreated, alcoholism can affect the quality of life of the person as well as it interferes with the person’s physical and mental health, and negatively impacts family, social or work responsibilities.
There are many signs and symptoms of Alcoholism that indicate alcohol may be a problem: Nausea, Vomiting, Violent Episodes Occur When rinking, and Becoming Angry When Confronted about drinking alcohol dependence can develop over the years and follows a predictable pattern. Over time, the person may lose control over drinking and may not be able to stop even if they want to. And if alcohol consumption is reduced or stopped, withdrawal symptoms can be experienced. The most severe kind of drinking is called ‘binge drinking’, periods of time with continuous heavy alcohol consumption. If alcoholism continues, the mental and physical health of the alcoholic can seriously deteriorate. Many of the body’s organs can damage which lowers resistance. Relationships at home or society may become damaged, and there can be financial and legal problems due to the alcoholic’s inability to stop drinking alcohol.
