What Teens and Parents Need to Know About, Drinking, Drugging, Driving and the Law – Part 1

The purpose of this 3-part article isn’t to preach or lecture you about not drinking or using drugs. I realize that many teens reading this have probably already been faced with making that decision at one time or another. I hope the information contained in the following will do; help you make the proper decision when it comes to using alcohol or drugs, before getting behind the wheel of an automobile or being a passenger in an automobile being driven by someone who has just consumed alcohol or drugs. You and you alone will be making that choice. I only ask that when you consider the fact that when you make that choice, you can be taking a risk. And, when you take a risk you take the chance of having to face a consequence.

The type of support we choose is a personal choice. For me, a combination of professional medical support and the fellowship of Alcoholics Anonymous, helps me keep sober on a daily basis. Professional advice on medical matters is paramount in my opinion. I have found fellowship keeps me safe from relapse and has improved my outlook on living simply a day at a time. What Exactly is the Root Source of Sorrow/strife?

Sorrow and pain manifest when we are unaware of certain underlying realities. Maharshi Vasishtha while explaining to Lord Rama the cause of sorrow says that it is spiritual ignorance (Ajnana or Maya). This ignorance can be overcome via attainment of divine wisdom via the path of Yoga of Wisdom (Jnana Yoga). As per the scripture Yoga Vasishtha:

“AAYADHO VYAADHAYASHCHAIVA

DWAYA DUKHASYA KAARANAM.

TANNIVRITIHI SUKHAM VIDYAAT

TATKSHAYO MOKSHA UCHYATAY.”

MEANING: “This material world gives us to types of sorrows i.e. bodily and mental. They can be overcome via wisdom (Jnana) based austerities. Moksha or salvation is nothing but this overcoming of material sorrow in totality.”
