Alcohol Symptoms: Want to Know More About Learning/intellectual Disabilities?
Question by captainvanadium: Want to know more about learning/intellectual disabilities?
I have been working with students with learning disabilities for about a year. Most of the students have fetal alcohol syndrome. I have just discovered that one of the students has actually never been medically diagnosed as having FAS.
This is a confusing situation because this student has a real confusing “mishmash” of “symptoms.” S/he dropped out of school so how much of the inability to work with numbers is related to gaps in his knowledge & how much is a real disability?
When s/he is “underpressure”, they simply run. Often this student are out living on the streets but will claim “I was working on myself.” S/he has picked up all the new age terms/lingo from countless workshops (most of which never get finished) to justify what s/he is doing.

National Institute on Alcohol Abuse: The Top 6 Things You Should Know About Alcoholism
According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, one in every 13 adults – or, 14 million Americans – are currently suffering from alcohol abuse or are alcoholic. If you or someone you know is suffering from this condition, there are several things you should know so you can get the help you need.
What is the difference between alcohol abuse and alcohol dependence?
Alcohol abuse is having dangerous or unhealthy drinking habits. Some of the most common are binge drinking or drinking every day of the week. This type of abuse can cause you to miss work or important events, harm important relationships, and may even lead to things like drinking and driving.
Alcohol abuse eventually leads to alcohol dependence, also known as alcoholism, which is a physical or mental addiction. In other words, the affected person feels they must drink to get by.
Alcoholism Is: Is Alcoholics Anonymous Effective? Get the Facts FIRST – Your Life Might Depend on It
“Keep coming back, it works if you work it!” This is what is chanted at the end of every meeting, but what if you have “worked it” and you still keep going back and getting drunk or loaded? Now, most people in the program will say things like, “Well, you must not have really done the steps right,” or “You didn’t go to enough meetings,” or “You didn’t pray to your Higher Power,” or “You know you did something wrong or else you would still be sober!”
Since what you are told from your very first 12-step meeting is, “Your only options are to get sober using our Program, or it’s jails, institutions or death,” you tend to stop thinking for yourself, (since it was your “best thinking that got you here”), stop questioning, and just follow what other’s tell you to do. This would be fine if this is what worked… but unfortunately, evidence is proving otherwise.
