Question by girrlziller: How do I deal with guilt from moving away from my alcoholic mom?
I’m 28 and I’m moving to Texas for law school in one month. The only problem is that I feel so guilty for leaving my mother alone. She’s an alcoholic and refuses to get help. Plus she’s retired, so she has nothing to do all day which compounds the problem. On 3 separate occasions I’ve forced her to go to rehab, and each time she began drinking once she got out. I know “you can’t help someone unless they want help,” but isn’t it my responsibility as a daughter to act in her best interest? I just believe that there are times when you have to make the decision for your loved one, when they are hurting themselves and won’t seek help.

Question by Bryan S: Is there any hope for an HIV POZ person with end stage liver disease from alcohol? Does anyone have experienc?
I can’t find anything about the lives of alcoholics and HIV+ and their hope for life. Or even what the end is like? Please, I need some help other than “stop drinking” – did that already but it is too late…. thanks.

It also is the time when too many people get behind the wheel and drive impaired, says Cullan F. Meathe of Peninsula Transportation Group, LLC.  He suggests handing the car keys over to a non-drinking friend, or calling a taxi. Other helpful ideas include prearranging for a sedan or limousine to pick up the party-goers when they are ready to go home.

All too often, drivers who should not be operating a vehicle cause tragic accidents. When they turn the key in the ignition, they may not believe they are legally intoxicated and might feel it’s only a short trip home anyway.
