In modern day science alcoholism is treated as a disease that can be cured if proper care is taken to deal with it adequately. An alcohol treatment center implements newer ways to deal with alcoholism in an effective way. The actual cause of alcoholism cannot be established. Addiction can be defined as a dependence on substances such as tobacco, alcohol and drugs. These substances are harmful and once ingested they affect the nervous system and the brain. Many people today, get addicted to these substances. Start is always for fun or for stress relief, by peer pressure or just because they want to enjoy the high it gives.

Many consider substance abuse to be a stress buster not realizing that its consistent use slowly leads them to addiction and complications in life. Counseling is given to addicts as part of the traditional addiction treatment. It has been proved recently that those suffering from addiction suffer from chemical imbalances in their brains and bodies too.
