I’m 19 and came to college in January. I left a bad environment where there was a lot of verbal/emotional abuse from my alcoholic mom. She has lost friends who she had for years, since I was 5 years old, and now has a alcoholic/ ex-heroin addict boyfriend. She has many guy friends who I believe are alcoholics as well. There are people who I have never met before. I remember one night this past fall when she was drinking and had a guy over and had sex with him in our living room and I could hear it all night. I tried talking to her about it but she shut me out completely. I have tried many times to talk to my mom about what she’s doing but at first she kept saying she was going to cut down on drinking and then every time after that she would just put me down and get very mad. I felt like I was “walking on egg shells” everyday to make it by. I knew when I came to college that I was very affected by my moms drinking but now I know I was extremely affected by my moms drinking. She’s very toxic to me and has done a lot of things to me. She would tell me how she was only getting $ 170 a month from my dad so she could get money from me and she’s really getting $ 570 a month. I keep getting farther away from her and not talking to her too much because I find it better for me (even though I wish we weren’t in this situation because its very sad). I think clearer when I don’t have that pressure of my moms sickness on me. It seems like my mom cant understand why everything is happening (she cant tell that her drinking is making her lose relationships) or just that she doesnt really care. Is this common for alcoholics? Do they lose many friends and family members?
