My Boyfriend and I Are Both Recovering Alcoholics. Is It Inappropriate for Us to Attend Meetings Together?
Question by Cleo1324: My boyfriend and I are both recovering alcoholics. Is it inappropriate for us to attend meetings together?
Both my boyfriend and I have been sober for almost 2 years. In the past, we attended meetings together, but I stopped going for about 6 months. Now, I want to get back into the habit of going and making enhancing my sobriety a priority, but my boyfriend does not want me to attend “his meetings”. I am a little hurt by this, since we don’t live together or spend an extensive amount of time together, and I had thought it would be a good thing for us to do something positive together. Also, I would just feel more comfortable/less awkward going with someone I know… Am I being unreasonable, or is it bad to go to meetings with your significant other?
He only goes to open meetings, so there isn’t much talking about his personal experiences involved. When he leads, he wants me to attend, so I don’t think he is concerned about maintaining privacy… It just seems like he wants to keep that a separate part of his life, and I don’t understand why. I don’t want to go with him every time, just once a week.
