Symptoms Alcohol: What Is Sugar Alcohol and Should It Be Avoided?

Question by Katie S: What is sugar alcohol and should it be avoided?
I’m an active female, working out 6 days a week for at least 1.5 hours. Recently, I’ve added balance bars to my daily diet to help pump in some extra protein. But I’ve noticed some of the ‘carb smart’ bars claim they have less carbs b/c they don’t count the grams of sugar alcohol… Is that terrible for you? I understand the idea of avoiding carbs and sugars… but what about that? Are there any good bars out there (15+ grams of protein) that are better for you?

Thanks!

Sugar alcohols aren’t true “alcohols” in the liquor sense, and they aren’t bad for you except that they tend to cause gastric disturbances in people. Everyone reacts differently, however the symptoms range from mild gas, to terrible gas, and even the runs. Make sure to read labels and keep track of how much you’re eating so you don’t have an accident. It’s a shame they have such embarrassing side effects, because they sweeten things very well. Especially sugar free chocolates.

Five Major Problems:
Prohibiton was nearly impossible to enforce.

Serious crimes, such as homicides, assault, and battery, increased nearly 13 percent, while other crimes involving victims increased 9 percent.

Organized crime (gangsters) developed in major cities and bootlegging increased.

Deaths from poisoned liquor rose from 1,064 in 1920 to 4,154 in 1925.

Prohibition did not reduce alcohol consumption. It actually increased during the time it was in force.
