High Anxieties: Cultural Studies in Addiction

High Anxieties: Cultural Studies in Addiction

High Anxieties explores the history and ideological ramifications of the modern concept of addiction. Little more than a century old, the notions of addict as an identity and addiction as a disease of the will form part of the story of modernity. What is addiction? This collection of essays illuminates and refashions the term, delivering a complex and mature understanding of addiction. Brodie and Redfield’s introduction provides a roadmap for readers and situates the fascinating essays within a larger, interdisciplinary framework. Stacey Margolis and Timothy Melley’s pieces grapple with the psychology of addiction. Cannon Schmitt and Marty Roth delve into the relationship between opium and the British Empire’s campaign to control and stigmatize China. Robyn R. Warhol and Nicholas O. Warner examine accounts of alcohol abuse in texts as disparate as Victorian novels, Alcoholics Anonymous literature, and James Fenimore Cooper’s fiction. Helen Keane scrutinizes smoking, and Maurizio Viano turns to the silver screen to trace how the representation of drugs in films has changed over time. Ann Weinstone and Marguerite Waller’s essays on addiction and cyberspace cap this impressive anthology.

Recovery From Addiction

Recovery from Addiction

Millions of people enter or seriously consider entering alcohol or drug treatment each year. In their understandable state of urgency, most first-time treatment seekers and their loved ones may rush to the first treatment option they encounter. The Useful Lie: How the Recovery Industry Has Entrapped America in a Disease Model of Addiction

The real truth about Recovery? It contradicts science and medicine. It contradicts the Bible. It doesn’t work. Nevertheless, millions of Americans have been led to believe that Recovery is the answer to addictive behavior. In this startling book you’ll learn shocking facts like these: – Even though 87% of Americans believe alcoholism is a disease, there is no scientific evidence to support the disease model of alcoholism. Yet the model provides the basis for nearly all Recovery programs.- According to available evidence, addicts in Recovery programs have no better recovery rate than those who receive no treatment.- In spite of billions of dollars spent on Recovery, there are more alcoholics and drug addicts now than before the Recovery approach came into vogue.- Though widely thought to have Christian roots, Alcoholics Anonymous has more in common with Eastern religions than Christianity. It is time to blow the whistle on the Recovery industry. The Useful Lie provides all the necessary evidence. More than that, it points the way toward genuine freedom from addiction.

San Pedro College Bachelor of Science in Nursing students present a trailer about a seminar on smoking, alcoholism, and drug abuse.

Late in the day on April 29, 2011 I located the Western Arctic NDP candidate, Dennis Bevington, at a roadside rally in Yellowknife. Lucky for me he was able to take a few minutes for a quick interview before he had to catch an airplane heading for Fort Smith for more campaign events. Because time was limited I was only able to ask a few questions but Mr. Bevington did respond to how his party would deal with the the high cost of living in the north, infrastructure development, the high rates of alcoholism and drug abuse and sustainable development in the NWT.
