Question by palominopup: Can anyone answer question about Alabama divorce laws?
September of 2008, I left an abusive alcoholic husband. I moved out of our family home because I knew he would not leave and I was afraid of him. I tried to get him to agree to a fair divorce without lawyers involvement because of the money, but he fought me at every turn. So, I finally I had a legal secretary, who was a friend of mine, draw up the divorce in June of 2009 (almost a year after I left him). I filed it, and they tried to serve him for 30 days. He was a police officer at one time, then worked as a legal investigator for a large law firm, now he calls himself a private investigator – so I knew he was avoiding service. I eventually had to threaten to have him served at his girlfriend’s house. He went and picked up the papers. He refused to sign and waited until the deadline for a response to file his “answer”. Basically, saying that since I left him, I get nothing.
