Do I Really Need a Family Like This?

Question by deniseree2: Do I really need a family like this?
I have a screwed up family. Growing up, my dad was an alcoholic and drug addict. Lots of random people showed up at home, physical, mental abuse ensued, etc. My mom is completely dominated by this man(i’ve tried my entire lifetime to help her free, infact many people have, but she keeps coming back). But truth be told, he did get better. Now he’s just an alcoholic. My siblings were totally controlling of me. I guess their way of protecting me while growing up. But it turned insane when they locked me in the house, and called me several derogatory remarks if I ever disobeyed and then used physical violence on me. And yet my entire family keeps saying family is first and we should always stick together. Well I went to college, diagnosed with depression (DUH) and the psychiatrist said my family was absolute poison and that I need to cut my ties with them. I believe him, but at the same time I know i’ll feel horrible when I don’t have a family anymore. What do i do?
