Spouse Alcoholic: Are Ultimatums Ever Worth Trying? Question About Alcoholic Spouse…?
Question by Marissa C: Are ultimatums ever worth trying? Question about alcoholic spouse…?
I’m married to an alcoholic. His drinking has caused many problems in our relationship as you can imagine. We also have 2 small children (ages 2 and 6) and he will often cuss at them or scream at them while intoxicated. In other words, he can be an angry drunk. His drinking has also caused some issues for him at work as well.
In a nut shell, it’s a big issue. He admits that he’s an alcoholic but doesn’t feel that he needs to change his behavior. I’m getting pretty damn tired of it. I often think about divorcing him. I’ve tried talking about this with him and it seems pretty obvious that he doesn’t want to change.
Would giving him an ultimatum such as: either get sober or we’re leaving, be worth trying? Has anyone here ever successfully helped their spouse lead a sober lifestyle?
Alcoholic Denial: Just How Harmful Is Denial?
Question by Julia: Just how harmful is denial?
I explore my feelings all the time and I’m trying to cut down b/c I’m not very productive when I’m overanalyzing psychological stuff happening in my life.
However, how about if you are the opposite? You don’t like your feelings and will do anything to avoid them. My friend who is an alcoholic is very jovial and extroverted, the last person you’d suspect has problems in life. I notice that he will not talk about how he feels. When I ask how he’s doing, it’s always, “Good” or “fine”.
Even though he’s been to rehab, and continues to do follow-up care, he thinks that he can be a social drinker. He always talk about his alcoholism in a very distant, third-person manner.
