A roadshow designed to help people in Bath live healthier lifestyles has proved a big success.

The SouthGate health day took place on Saturday at the shopping centre, with experts in health and fitness on hand to give tips and advice to passers-by.

The event saw young and old alike able to get a wide range of information including on how to pack a healthy lunchbox, choose the best exercise option and give up smoking.

“The day included advice on stopping smoking with people able to have a go on a CO monitor and sign up to quit smoking sessions where we offer prescriptions and support.

Six people signed up to stop smoking at the morning session with two going straight into Boots and getting prescriptions.

“We have also had information on health trainers where people work on a one-to-one with people in the community to make healthy lifestyle changes.

“We have had great feedback from the public. A lot of people have enjoyed the food on offer and took information such as our Change for Life spinning wheels for the kids.

“A lot of people have found it useful because they didn’t know the services were there or how to access them.”

Marcia Burgham, B&NES teenage pregnancy project officer, said it was hoped the roadshow would become a quarterly event. People have been able to get advice on things like chlamydia testing and information from [drug and alcohol service] Project 28,” she said. “Parents could also get advice on how to talk to their children about sex and relationships.”

Shopper Rachael Marshall and her son Max, seven, from Chippenham, were both pleased with the advice on healthy eating they received.

“I wanted to get some advice about healthy eating and Max liked the pitta bread,” she said.

The event was the result of a collaboration between B&NES Council and NHS B&NES, with local businesses also keen to get involved.

Sports experts from TeamBath and Aquaterra were on hand with taster sessions while Boots gave out vitamins and Sainbury’s provided food.
