Are Alcoholics Really “powerless” Over Drinking the Drug Alcohol?

Question by abnjim5: Are alcoholics really “powerless” over drinking the drug alcohol?
While I understand that a satisfying behaviour is often difficult to control, (humans want more of a perceived good thing) are people “powerless” over controlling their indulgence in substances even once they have started ingesting it? The Alcoholics Anonymous doctrine states that people are “powerless” over their titled “disease”. If people with substance abuse issues can empower themselves and use self-discipline to abstain from harmful durgs like alcohol, why do they tell “newcomers” to AA they are powerless and need god or higher power to help them change? What does this suggest?
