Q&A: I Applied to Be an Assistant at a Drug Rehab. When I Interview, Should I Tell Them I’ve Been to Rehab Myself?

Question by Judy: I applied to be an assistant at a drug rehab. When I interview, should I tell them I’ve been to rehab myself?
I went to rehab when I was 18 because I was drinking and partying nonstop. I was severely depressed and rehab saved my life. I’m not convinced I’m alcoholic, but have a problem with depression and an addictive personality. Regardless, I stopped drinking until I was about 22. The depression is under control. I’m happy and love my life.

Now, I’ll have a glass of wine at weddings, special occasions. It’s not really “relapsing” but…age and wisdom have guided me to reassess my priorities I guess. I don’t turn to drinking to solve my problems like I did when I was a teen.

Should I tell them my story?

Yes. Your experience will make you a valuable employee/counselor, etc.

After all, what does a sheltered human know about drug abuse? What help would a Vacation Bible School counselor be to a heroin addict?
