Texas Police Call for CPS Reform After Child’s Death

Schertz police calling for CPS reform after child’s death. Updated May 13, 2010, Karen Grace KENS 5 News San Antonio. The Schertz Police Department says Child Protective Services failed to protect a little girl from her father. So detectives there are taking their fight to lawmakers. “I believe she would be alive today if this had been brought to light,” said Jonathon Patrick of the Schertz Police Department. The eight year-old girl died from an infected appendix, and her father, David Brasse, is accused of criminally negligent homicide. Schertz police are puzzled about why CPS didn’t tell them about the child’s history of abuse and neglect. Police say when the family moved away from Bexar County, a caseworker was never assigned to follow up. “You can’t do anything about a problem if you don’t know it exists,” Patrick said. “And had someone followed up on their transfer here to Guadalupe (County), they would have been discovered.” Schertz police met with State Sen. Carlos Euresti to call for an internal investigation. There’s no word yet on the outcome of that request. Brasse’s trial is coming up in September. He’s out on bond. If convicted, he faces up to 99 years in prison. KENS 5 contacted CPS for comment, but they have not provided a statement. www.kens5.com ———– 02/11/2009.
