Alcohol Training- State Mandates Vary, But Employers’ Concern Shouldn’t

Every single state has different regulations regarding alcohol training and service. Some states will require little to no actual training or education for servers, while other states will require a lot of education and training in order to be certified to serve alcohol. Regardless of what your state requires, business owners and employers shouldn’t waver on their requirements. It might seem easy to just hire people and let them work, but having proper alcohol training for your employees can be invaluable to the success of your business.

While your state may or may not have specific regulations for alcohol training, your business should have guidelines in place simply to protect yourself. It might not seem like that big of a deal, but the first time that you’re put into a position of facing legal troubles or other issues because of improper service techniques or even just customer complaints, you will realize that the training was a worthy expense. It isn’t always expensive, and each state offers different approved courses that you and your employees can take to make your business more reputable and professional.

Sure, it might be a bit troublesome to have employees trained and certified to serve alcohol at your restaurant, but it’s definitely an investment that will pay off in the end. Alcohol training, like food safety, is a very critical educational tool for everyone. The more people know, the more responsible they will be on the job. The more responsible they are, the better your business will look in the public spotlight. What more could you ask for? If your state has alcohol training requirements, you will need to at least adhere to those. However, if they are not very serious or strict, you might consider getting extra training for yourself and your employees just to be safe.
