Grants for Mental Health Awareness Among Asian-American Women
Grants For Mental Health Awareness Among Asian-American Women
Low status of women belonging to minorities since centuries is still rendering them most vulnerable sex notwithstanding with many facing various mental health issues and problems To create awareness about the same, New York state officials bestowed around 0,000 in grants starting the mental health workshops for Asian-American women and help women in facing their mental health problems. The suicide rate for Asian American women aged 65 years or above in the New York city is 11.6 per 100,000 people with many of the women feel isolated from the rest of the community and feel themselves troubled in adjusting themselves in the new culture. Besides they also never tell others about their own depression. Though the health status among women varies between women belonging to various minority groups by socio economic status yet women of color often have to bear the social stress of leading the household if she is alone. With limited resources, low paying but at the same time high stress jobs contribute towards the high incidence of mental illness, depression, drug/alcohol abuse and hypertension. They also often have to be the part of the alcohol/ tobacco advertisements and have to indulge in behaviors not conducive to their health. Women of color are also not enough participatory to the research protocols due to the lack of the same. On account of the low participation rates of clinical trials, there are no chances these women could be diagnosed properly. Besides, these women often have to face cultural discrimination and cultural incompatibility. To bring in the improvement in the mental and physical health among the minority women, there is a need on the part of the Federal Government to take necessary actions, which could only be possible with the help of the grants. More and more grants should be dispersed directly to develop the research protocols aiming to redress the health related issues being suffered by women of color. There should also be grants directly in the form of federal government to encourage these women themselves to take part in the medical education programs. The programs should also be patient oriented in other words women should be educated about their mental health in their own native languages. Though there are several organizations working in this field and are being funded through the charitable and private foundations, but need of the hour is for the federal government to approach the minority sections of the society for their upliftment as they are also a part of the American democratic state and ought to have every right including the right to healthy lives.
