My friend has a drinking problem. He is in complete denial that this is a problem. I have known him for over 20 years and I really want him to see what he is doing to himself. He thinks that because he doesn’t drink every day it is not a problem. He drinks 4 or 5 days a week and some times disappears on drinking binges. I don’t know how to help him see what he’s doing to himself. He has been ordered by court in the past to alcohol treatment but sees it as a punishment forced for no good reason. I live in northeast Illinois, does anyone know of a good treatment program to help him see what he’s doing to himself?

All I can recommend is to somehow get him to agree to read the book Alcoholics Anonymous. In the very beginning of the book there’s a part that’s entitled ” The Doctor’s opinion.” This gives the reader a physician’s perspective. Another chapter in the book is called “More about alcoholism.” In this chapter it discusses the different types of drinkers. They address the “hard” drinker. The “binge” drinker, and the “heavy” drinker. Then they address the late stage Alcoholic. In the book these drinkers are referred to as “last gaspers.” If he will agree to at least read it, and he’s honest with himself. He will find he fits at least one category of Alcohol abuser.
