The Seed
Fikir’s wakes up one morning after dreaming of an angel and finds an orange. He plants the seeds and leaves to shine shoes. A bully takes his shoeshine rig and Fikir goes to the river to think. Some other street youth see him and show him the ropes in selling napkins. Fikir sees another angel while selling napkins and everything changes. He starts to hear and see things happening all over the planet and begins to track down parents of the sages and prophets of the approaching golden age. Yimta begins his day by confronting his sister at her work after hearing she’s been hanging around tourists in clubs. She admits she’s looking for a husband to marry and take her abroad. He gives her some money and leaves, only to see Fikir at a stoplight and tells Yimta he is about to meet his wife. At the garage where he works he finds Genet and her prissy sister and falls in love at first sight. Genet has been promised to aTuklu, an Ethiopian/Canadian who comes to seek her hand in marriage. Genet follows her heart and stands Tuklu up to be with Yimta and Tuklu goes through an alcoholic relapse, ending up in a hotel with a prostitute, trying to talk her into another profession. Netsanet dreams of freeing the lions at the zoo, being a fulltime poet, and having his own taxi van. When he meets Mesmur, he knows he’s found his true love.
