Fighting Cancer

Fighting Cancer

Fighting cancer can be through treatment after one has been diagnosed with the disease or it can be through prevention especially by those people who are at an increased risk. Fighting the disease through treatment is always a Herculean task and those who manage to do it always find it to be a life-changing experience. Beating cancer always gives the survivors renewed determination and spirit to face other tough challenges in life

Many people believe that cancer is a preventable disease. This believe is premised on the fact that several cancer risk factors are mainly lifestyle or environmental-related.  Sometimes cancer is as a result of genetic factors. When one has a close relative who has cancer, he or she is at an increased risk of developing the disease. For these vulnerable people, fighting cancer can be through prevention. Alcohol for example is an avoidable risk that is associated with esophageal, oral and breast cancer.

Exercise is another cancer prevention method. Physical inactivity can lead to increased risk of colon and breast cancer. Obese or overweight as well as smoking are other risk factors that can be avoided. Unprotected sex can lead to transmission of the human papilloma virus which is responsible for cervical cancer in women. This can be prevented by use of condoms during when having sex.

Avoiding the use of exogenous hormones as well as limiting our exposure to ionizing and ultraviolet radiation are other ways of fighting cancer. Obesity increases the risk of developing cancer and therefore dietary practices that could lead to obesity should be avoided at all costs. Chemo prevention is another cancer prevention method where medications are used to keep the disease at bay.
