10 Signs That You’re an Alcoholic

10 Signs That You’re an Alcoholic

Anyone wondering about their level of drinking should be concerned simply because they’re wondering, and people without alcohol abuse problems very rarely have a second though about their level of use. Although many people can use alcohol even at high levels and never develop any serious complications from their use, a great many of us cannot, and drinking in excess and with frequency too often leads to alcohol abuse, and unfortunately to alcoholism.

The greater your score of yes answers the more concerned you need be. Answer each question honestly, and think about the implications of your score for your future health and happiness.

10 warning signs of a problem with alcohol

1) Do you look forward to the weekend so you can go out (or stay home) and get drunk?

2) Can you drink far more than others, and appear reasonably sober?

3) Can you drink more now than you could when you started drinking?

4) Are you always pushing the party forward; you want to keep drinking even when your friends have had enough?

5) Do you customarily drink before the bar or before the party?

6) Do you drink alone at home?

7) Do you go to a bar and drink alone?

8) Are the events of the night before ever hazy (blackouts)?

9) Do all of the people you commonly associate with in your free time also drink heavily?

10) Do you ever feel guilty about your drinking?

What’s your score?

No quiz can tell you with certainty whether or not you are an alcoholic, but the more yes answers you have, the more concerned you should be.

Neither a problem of alcohol abuse or alcoholism is likely to disappear without a concerted effort, although the treatment intensity required for alcohol abuse is far less than that required for alcoholism. If you are concerned about your level of drinking don’t wait to get help, the problem isn’t going to go away, and the longer you leave it before attempting to stop the harder it will ultimately be.

No matter how bad things get though, there is always hope, and taking the first step to better health and happiness requires real courage and a commitment to change. You can always stop, just make a choice, get help, and start enjoying a life free from the abuse of alcohol.
