Guillain Barre Syndrome, Symptoms, Diagnosis and Treatment
Although, Guillain Barre Syndrome is rare, it is severe as well. This syndrome is considered as the severe form of paralysis and it directly affects the lower body area and gradually moves towards upper limbs and face. In the early stages, it affects the peripheral nervous system. The person, who is affected from this syndrome, slowly and steadily loses all of his reflexes and eventually goes through a complete paralysis. If this disorder is not treated early, it will become severe and eventually causes death to the person.
Symptoms and Signs
It is important to have a good idea about the symptoms and signs of this fatal and complex disorder. Generally, Guillain Barre Syndrome is caused by antigens which weaken the immune system of the body. In the initial stages the antigens attack the nervous system, damaging the nerves. This in turn results in the inflammation of conduction block and myelin. As a result of that minor body paralysis appears. This syndrome is normally caused by low hypersensitivity reaction. The apparent symptoms include stomach pain, low grade fevers and chills, nausea, migraines, loss of appetite and vomiting. Other symptoms may include regular headaches, migraines, pain in the back of head, constant exhaustion and tiredness.
Normally, the problem starts from the lower limbs and affects the reflexes. Tingling and numbness in legs are usually the symptoms of minor paralysis in lower limbs. Gradually this disorder begins to travel to the upper part of the limb and steadily affects the facial muscles and arms. This disorder also damages the cranial nerves and results in bulbar weakness which affects the breathing and swallowing process and eventually causes constant drooling. The patient may also feel pain in bladder area due to bladder dysfunction in severe cases.
Diagnosis
As we have said earlier that the common symptoms of Guillian Barre Syndrome are severe muscular pain and mild fever. There are other signs that suggest you the presence of this syndrome like unusual fluctuations in blood pressure, orthostatic hypo tension and hypertension. Immediate response to your medical treatment helps you to recover quickly and avoid severe symptoms. But your little careless attitude towards your health may cause you to face severe conditions and chances of recovery will be low. Different medical tests are taken to diagnosis the disease along with other symptoms like growing muscle paralysis, areflexia, absence of fever and proactive incident. Presently, there is no effective cure of the disease but the possibility of diagnosing the disease through different medical procedures is on higher side, which helps to lower the intensity of the disease.
CSF
It is commonly used to find the evidences of Guillain Barre Syndrome. It is very helpful in finding the details and information about albumino-cytological dissociation. CSF is a high protein 100-1000mg/dL, containing the high amount of protein and pleocytosis which is essential for the diffusion of white blood cells in the myelin. Pleocytosis’ usage boosts the immune system and provides a strong resistance against the infection.
