The Pulse 3.21: Alcoholism

Welcome to the Pulse Three-Point-Twenty-One: In this episode we hone in on a very serious chronic condition that affects eighteen point two million Americans. We’re talking about alcoholism. It’s defined as drinking alcoholic beverages at a level that interferes with physical health, mental health, and social, family, or job responsibilities. The summer months are often full of parties and a party atmosphere, so we’re taking a moment to highlight how to drink responsibly. In this video you’ll hear about the very basics when it comes to having an alcoholic drink. The liver metabolizes one drink every hour, so if you’re drinking more than that, the extra alcohol circulates through your body. You’ll also hear how different factors can affect how alcohol interacts with your body and brain. It is possible to consume alcohol at a healthy level; but you need to be aware of factors that make it more difficult for you to drink responsibly. A family history of alcoholism as well as ethnicity, physical fitness and prescription medicines can all influence the way alcohol affects you. In this video Liz shares her very personal alcohol addiction story. Liz talks about how she started binge drinking in high school and continued into college, where she would drink three to four times per week.
