Meeting up with buddies for a beer at your favorite pub after a days hard work or as a celebration of some kind, has gained popularity over the years. The first alcohol intake always seems so innocent with no indication of getting to us later on. Negative effects of the same arise from continuous consumption and more often than not leads to a serious condition known as alcoholism. However, the rate at which addiction sets in, depends on the frequency of an individual’s consumption and on the quantity their body can handle.
Addiction varies from one person to another and this is where the problem of defining exactly what alcoholism is sets in. Causes of the same are also diverse and varied form individual to individual and from community to another. However, it has been noted that genetics can be a causative factor. Males are more prone to inherit the condition than females
Other factors like peer pressure and social status will also influence one’s drinking habits. Apart from the genetically influenced and social factors, there are others like psychological ones which include stress and emotional instability that will lead one to drinking. For many of these people, drinking is as a compensation for the troubles they are going through. They will tend to do so in secret and will even have secretive places for hiding their drinks e.g. in the car.
Alcoholism can be detected through some symptoms like forgetfulness and irresponsibility. They also tend to show irritability if asked about their drinking habits. This is not all. It is not uncommon for them to get into legal and financial problems related to their addiction to alcohol. This disease can altogether be treated if detected early enough.
