The First Year of Recovery – Steve Dansinger

The First Year of Recovery – Steve Dansinger

Steve focuses on his first year and most important part of his recovery. When he was going through his first year he felt it was never going to end and that he would die if he wouldn’t be able to take a drink or use a drug. He felt he would just come undone at the seams if he couldn’t use something in order to stop the feeling that was happening in the moment. But this is his remarkable story on how he is now 20 years of not using. In that first year, he felt like he was a soldier and he had to keep marching forward and just don’t drink or use no matter what. For him the benefits of making it through that first year have made all the subsequent years easier. He would meet others in recovery at coffee shops, and they would drink coffee or tea at one in the morning and talk about themselves just to stay sober and get through that day. Along with all the bad memories he remembers all the good ones, and the times he spent at these coffee shops helping each other get through it. If he did not make it through that first year 19 years ago, he knows he would not be sitting in his office giving this interview today. He is grateful to himself for listening to the important message he was told when he started out his first year to not listen to the voices in his head or others who would say that all these meetings and therapy was not working. He wants to transmit that message to others and let them know that after your first year it will get better and you will have great memories
