High Functioning Alcoholics
High functioning alcoholics could either be male or female. They are most likely people who have jobs such as, lawyers, doctors, pilots or even politicians. These are people who are able to go around doing their jobs properly without suspicion arising that, they could be having a problem. They are people who function exceedingly well in their various aspects of life such as family and social relations, and in work related issues. Such people are not considered to have a problem because of how well they are able to run their lives and do what is expected of them.
One of the biggest problems of high functioning alcoholics is that they live in denial. They will never accept that they have a problem with alcohol. Most of these people stay for many years with the same problem because of this denial. They are therefore unable to seek help until it is too late. Family members and colleagues also contribute to the problem by failing to accept that, the signs being exhibited by the person are due to alcoholism.
High functioning alcoholics do not have to drink every day. However, their thoughts will mainly be focused on when they are likely to get their next drink. After their drinking episodes, they are likely to do things that are out of character for them. They are likely to engage in risky sexual behavior or drunken driving. Other indicators include: blackouts after drinking, drinking large amounts in one sitting despite having decided not to. They tend to get remorseful about slips that would have accorded while drunk. This leads them to working harder to avoid future mistakes although it in no way affects their drinking.
This problem can go on for many years until something happens during a drinking episode. It is unfortunate that in most cases high functioning alcoholics will only seek treatment after such an episode has occurred. This is because, they now fear that they are going to be exposed and that they could end up losing everything they had worked for. It is important to confront early enough somebody you suspect is suffering from the disease before it is too late.
