Alcohol is a psychoactive drug that has a depressant effect. A high blood alcohol content reduces attention and slows reaction speed. Alcohol can be addictive, and the state of addiction to alcohol is known as alcoholism. Most countries have laws against drunk driving, ie, driving with a certain concentration of alcohol in the blood or while impaired by alcohol. Punishments for violation include fines, temporary or permanent loss of driver’s license, and imprisonment. Similar prohibitions exist for drunk sailing, drunk bicycling, and even drunk rollerblading. Short-term effects of alcohol consumption include intoxication, dehydration, and ultimately alcohol poisoning. Long-term effects of alcohol include changes to metabolism in the liver and brain, and possible addiction (alcoholism). Alcohol intoxication affects the brain, causing slurred speech, clumsiness, and delayed reflexes. A blood alcohol content of 0.45, or the amount which would prove fatal in 50% of test subjects.
