On Alcoholism: Why Are People Unable to File Lawsuit and Win Against Tabloids When Most the Stories Are Lies or Exaggerations?
Question by : Why are people unable to file lawsuit and win against tabloids when most the stories are lies or exaggerations?
I see headlines like “George W. Bush and Condi Rice in Love Affair as Laura Bush Walks Out on Marriage” and “Laura Bush Files for Separation Amid Bush’s Relapse to Alcoholism”. These are not exact quotes but the approach of the tabloids. Why can’t someone like Bush file a lawsuit for defamation and win? I would assume I’d be sued for defamation if I wrote an article and sold it talking about someone falsely, why is it okay in tabloids? Or is it not legal and the only reason the people lied about don’t file lawsuits is because they have better things to do?
I am not asking if it is morally right for these tabloids to lie, obviously it is not, but I am asking if it is legal?

Because damages must be shown to be real and caused by the tabloid story.
You can sue all you want but if you can’t prove damages you will be rewarded nothing but a waste of time and maybe a counter.
